Read on to learn more about Camilo and what he’s been up to at the Natural Areas Conservancy!
What motivated you to pursue an internship with the NAC?
CGG: I was looking to get more experience in environmental conservation, and I met former interns who spoke very highly of their experiences with the NAC.
Can you tell us more about the specific project you’re working on and what drew you to it?
CGG: I was involved with the Nature and Nature-based Features project last year, but I got really excited when talking to the trails interns about the work they were doing. When I heard about the trail mapping position, I realized it would be a great combination of what I was learning in GIS and learning about trail work.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned so far during your time with the NAC?
Surround yourself with positive people who are passionate and you can go places and have fun doing it.
Do you have a favorite spot in NYC’s natural areas that you love to visit?
CGG: I grew up going to Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and in the last few years what I’ve been learning in school and work has only increased my appreciation for its natural areas.
What advice would you give to New Yorkers who want to get more involved in conservation efforts?
CGG: There are so many ways to get involved and make a difference. Don’t get too pessimistic about the current environmental situation. You’ll feel better getting out there with other people and doing what you can in a positive way.
What’s your next step after this internship?
CGG: I’m hoping to continue doing conservation work and finding a position where I can be a good land steward in New York City.
