On Saturday, October 3, the Natural Areas Conservancy in partnership with Marine Park Alliance planted 250 trees in Marine Park, Brooklyn! Over 50 volunteers participated in the planting on City of Forest Day—an annual NYC celebration and awareness-raising event for our city’s urban forest.

Marine Park is a maritime forest and marshland, and serves as a critical habitat for wildlife and humans alike! As the largest park in Brooklyn, this 800-acre oasis provides numerous benefits to the community, offering recreation, cleaner air, shade, and serenity.

Planting trees at this location is part of our larger effort to increase the urban forest canopy in the city, as well as strengthen existing forest ecosystems. We chose native trees to plant such as White Oak, Pitch Pine, Sassafras, Staghorn Sumac, Northern Bayberry, and Black Cherry, which are particularly suited to thrive in a maritime environment.

We plan to finish this project with a second planting in spring to reach a total of 500 trees!

This planting was made possible through generous support from One Tree Planted and in partnership with NYC Parks and the Marine Park Alliance.
