Events of the Day

4:00 PM to 5:00 PM: Successful Partnerships for Advancing Jamaica Bay Research and Experiential Learning

Learn about the results from this summer’s CUNY experiential learning course and internship at National Park Service’s Gateway National Recreation Area led by Brooklyn College-CUNY, the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay, and the Natural Areas Conservancy.

As part of the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay partnership, Brooklyn College’s Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences inaugurated a multidisciplinary initiative to advance environmental science education and scholarship. We will report on results of the 2016 experiential learning course and the Natural Areas Conservancy internship at National Park Service’s Gateway National Recreation Area demonstrating a successful pathway for student involvement in community relevant research.

Join project leads, faculty and students for a one hour presentation and discussion highlighting the synergy of this program and the benefits realized in community education, science training and knowledge of Jamaica Bay.

5:00 PM to 6:00 PM: Prospects for Resilience: Insights from New York City’s Jamaica Bay Book Release Celebration

Drawing on the insights and experiences of more than fifty scholars and practitioners, Prospects for Resilience: Insights from New York City’s Jamaica Bay sets forth an essential foundation of information and advice for those who need to create more resilient cities that work with, not against, nature.

This book inaugurates the work of the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay, an organization dedicated to increasing biodiversity, well-being, and adaptive capacity in Jamaica Bay and New York City.

Please join the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay and the contributing authors to celebrate the release of this important publication.

6:00 PM to 8:00 PM: Join us for a wine and cheese reception following the book panel.
