Climate Week 2016: Ecology Park Tour and Volunteering in Canarsie, Brooklyn
Join us for a rare opportunity for a private urban ecology tour as part of the Canarsie Green Neighborhoods program! The five-acre Ecology Park at Paerdegat Basin is not yet open to the public. It was designed with a focus on climate adaptation and coastal protection. The park includes 16 native coastal plant communities, including salt marshes; intertidal mudflats; and coastal grasslands, shrublands, and forests. This park was created as part of a larger restoration project that began in 2010 to restore 52 acres of wetlands and coastal grasslands.
This very special tour of the park will be led by John McLaughlin, Director of Ecological Services at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. This event is co-sponsored by the Natural Areas Conservancy, NYC Parks, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the Climate Museum. If you would like to volunteer with the NYC Parks’ Stewardship Team before the tour, from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will work on caring for street trees in Canarsie. Follow #CWNYC on social media for more information about this and other Climate Week NYC events.
