Green Neighborhoods: Street Tree Stewardship with the Billion Oyster Project

Volunteer with the Stewardship team and help care for our street trees in Soundview! Volunteers will help care for street trees around the neighborhood to ensure they are healthy and beautiful. After the event, Join staff from the Billion Oyster Project to learn about how oysters and oyster reefs play are playing a role in restoration planning and activities in New York Harbor. We’ll learn about New York City’s long ecological and economic history with oysters, where it all went wrong, and what thousands of New Yorkers are doing now to help turn the tide for this hard-working mollusk and its habitat.

Though Soundview Park’s own oyster reef will be submerged under high-water during this talk, oysters in a small aquarium will be demonstrating their amazing filtration ability for us on land. Since 2006, Soundview Park has been has been host to oyster research and restoration activities, making it the longest running and possibly most successful oyster restoration site to date in NYC. We’ll talk about why that is and hear what other locations have grabbed the attention of scientists and environmentalists throughout the region. Come dressed in sturdy boots, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty.
