Jamaica Bay Natural Areas Tour Series: Past and Present Fort Tilden

Join a National Park Service Park Ranger and Helen Forgione, Senior Ecologist at the Natural Areas Conservancy, for a walking tour of Fort Tilden’s military remnants that are slowly being reclaimed by nature. Fort Tilden served as an important military post during both world wars and the Cold War, and lastly as an Army Reserve post. Visit the remaining military fortifications while learning about the various plants and animals that now call them home. Decommissioned as a military base in 1970 and turned over to the National Park Service, Fort Tilden serves as a constant reminder of nature’s ability to reclaim the built environment and become a favorite home for flora and fauna.

Please wear appropriate footwear for a walk, and bring enough water to stay hydrated.

The Jamaica Bay Natural Areas Tour Series is a partnership program between the Natural Areas Conservancy and the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC). This program is generously supported by the JBRPC, a project of the Fund for the City of New York.
