Science of the Living City Presents – How Street Cleaners Saved the City
Robin Nagle, Anthropologist-in-Residence with the NYC Department of Sanitation and New York University Professor will present “How Street Cleaners Saved the City”.
Competent waste management is essential for any healthy metropolis. Before New York had effective street cleaning and garbage collection, living conditions in the city were appalling, and the most vulnerable populations paid the highest price. Robin Nagle reveals just how far we’ve come from the darkest days of the 19th century, makes clear what happens when garbage flows stop, and describes some of the perpetually changing dynamics of Sanitation’s mission today.
