In June, Lucas Chuk joined the NAC in the role of Environmental Data Coordinator. Lucas is a climate researcher whose work focuses on geospatial and quantitative analysis of terrestrial ecosystems to support the creation and maintenance of resilient natural areas.

Before entering the environmental field, Lucas worked as a professional photographer. He earned his Master of Arts in Climate and Society from Columbia Climate School and his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from Cal Poly Pomona.

What inspired you to work in the environmental field?

LC: Growing up in Hong Kong, vibrant greenery was always a backdrop to my life, hinting seasonal changes deeply intertwined with the dense urban environment. Yet, it wasn’t until I began capturing nature through my camera lens that a connection was truly sparked.

Through photography, I discovered a beauty unique to the natural world, alongside clear traces of human impact, from restoration to destruction. This view reinforced my belief that humanity is fundamentally a part of nature. Our relationship with the environment ought to be mutually respectful rather than exploitative, and I am committed to leveraging my skills to preserve this balance and protect its resilience.

What about the NAC’s mission resonates with you?

LC: The environmental field has a vast array of approaches, but the Natural Areas Conservancy occupies the precise sweet spot that aligns with my philosophy. Bridging applied scientific research with practical, empirical experience addresses the immediate, real-world concerns of land managers and practitioners. These partnerships and deep community engagement catalyze a more sustainable future for our urban natural areas, areas that serve as an essential home to both local residents and diverse wildlife populations.

What work are you looking forward to accomplishing in 2026?

LC: I am excited to help drive the national Urban Nature Map, co-developing this scalable resource in close collaboration with our partners at Yale. This project leverages a satellite-based approach to reveal and delineate critical natural areas within complex urban contexts. By providing an accessible and scalable tool for municipal leaders across the country, this tool serves as a cornerstone for research into ecosystem services, socio-economic impacts, and urban climate resilience. I anticipate finalizing this mapping infrastructure and translating it into an active tool for strategic conservation in 2027.

What’s your favorite park or natural area in NYC?

LC: Pelham Bay Park is truly a hidden gem. It offers an exceptional combination of beaches, hiking trails, and open spaces all in one location. Dipping your feet in the water after a hike is a delight. And the mixture of wetlands and forests provides vital habitat for local biodiversity, it is easy to spot an egret wading along the shoreline during a quiet afternoon.
